Frequently
the target of contention between developers and about everyone else, Big
Cottonwood Canyon received a reprieve a few years ago when Salt Lake City
purchased a 155 acre tract from United Park City Mines. Big Cottonwood Canyon is
unarguably beautiful. And a lot of people would like to have their homes built
there. The threat of forest fires doesn't seem to deter this kind of development
but now this portion of the canyon will be "public open space".
Though
this is wooded with aspens, there is a large meadow and a beaver pond. There are
some very nice, easy to moderate trails and the permanent ban on all-terrain
vehicles allows a relaxed, peaceful experience for the visitor.
While
we recommend getting out of the car and taking a short stroll, one can drive
through the canyon. From I-215 exit 6, head south about 2 miles to Cottonwood
Canyon Road (UT-190). Turn left and follow Cottonwood Canyon Road into and
through (if you choose) the canyon. The tract of land (described above) is about
11½ miles up the canyon.
Many
accommodations are 'booked
up' during the fall leaf viewing season. If you haven't made your hotel/motel reservations yet we
have included access to an on-line hotel reservation system for your convenience.
