New Jersey may be tiny
but the contrasts from the northern end of the state, through central Jersey
to the southern end are very severe. For exquisite fall leaf colors the north
takes all the honors. Our favorite spot, unfortunately, has had its glamour
subdued by the addition of a few thousand houses: Woodcliff Lake. The view
across the lake at the mountain on the west side was as good as it gets. Now
you have to be content with the few remaining trees and the many colored roof
tops.

But all is not lost.
As you approach the Pennsylvania border things get better in a hurry. Now our
favorite spot is US-209 along the Delaware river from I-80 to Milford. There
are many places to stop and absorb the views - and snap photos. The water is
almost never still like a mirror but the reflections of the many hued leaves
in the rippling water are a welcome desert.
If you take exit 53 of
I-80 and just follow the river (north, of course) and let your emotions
dictate. When you get to Milford, turn right on US-206 and head east toward
Branchville. There US-206 will strut off to the right but you will continue
straight on what is now Hwy-15. This will take you back to I-80 at exit 34.
Someone once
complained that this route is in Pennsylvania (at least US-209 is). True. But
you will be looking across the river at the leaves in New Jersey. Ah,
technicalities. Just enjoy the drive.
Most accommodations are 'booked
up' during the leaf-viewing season. If you haven't made your hotel/motel reservations yet we
have included access to an on-line reservation system for your convenience.
