NC-9 is an enchanting, back-woods road that offers a kaleidoscopic panorama during the autumn leaf season. NC-9 is a well-maintained two-lane road (not recommended for large campers) which eventually meets the Broad River and then follows it to the world famous Lake Lure. A really nice feature of this drive is that it goes through several different altitudes in a relatively short number of miles so, regardless of the time during the 'season', there is usually some beautiful display of color. NC-9 is accessed from Black Mountain at exit 64 of I-40. From Hendersonville take US-64 east from exit 18 of I-26 to its junction with NC-9 at Bat Cave. As an alternative, you can follow US-74A to I-40 and then take I-40 east to Black Mountain (exit 64) and then back to Bat Cave on NC-9. If you are starting from Black Mountain you might want to continue all the way on NC-9 (south) to US-74 (which is freeway), then go east on US-74 to US-221 (Alexander Mills). Go north on US-221 all the way to I-40 (Marion) and then return to Black Mountain of I-40. There are a number of options, all of them scenic and good roads.
