Theodore Island, in the Potomac River
within sight of the Lincoln Memorial, is only a few minutes drive from the
Mall area. Unfortunately, it isn't that easy to access. You must be driving
north on the George Washington Parkway. Just north of the Theodore Roosevelt
Bridge, on your right, you will see the parking lot. Access to the island is
by a neat footbridge. If you are southbound, exit at the Memorial Bridge, loop
the traffic circle to head back north on the GW Pkwy.
Note: We have been informed that there
is now a 2-hour parking limit (to discourage commuter parking?). Also, the
parking lot has a history for getting filled to capacity early in the day and
that the 2-hour limit does not seem to have helped. Get there early and enjoy
a short walk though a true island of natural 'wilderness' in the heart of a
megalopolis.
There are excellent accommodations for leaf-lookers in
the Greater Washington area. Many are outright economical. A Washington map
(and index) is available at reservations-network.net.
Just click on the community of choice. Enter your the dates you'll need the
accommodations, indicate the acceptable price range and check the amenities
you desire. A list of accommodations will then
appear. Select from the list to make your reservation. It is easy to make your
reservation and save money, too.
