Fall colors come
early to Colorado, typically starting to lose its summer green shortly after
Labor Day. By October, most of the Colorado deciduous trees are brown contrasted with the green
of the predominant conifers. Expect to see a lot of yellows because of the
predominance of aspens and cottonwoods.
A favorite destination for viewing the autumn leaves
in the Denver area is Golden Gate Canyon
State Park - only a
30 mile drive from Denver.
From I-70 and the
northern suburbs of Denver, take exit 265 (Hwy-58) to Hwy-93 in Golden. Turn
right (north) and continue on 93 for about one mile.
Turn left onto Golden Gate Canyon Road. It is about 13 more miles to the Park.
From downtown Denver,
take the US-6 freeway, past I-70 (which is the end of the free portion of
US-6), continuing on US-6 to Hwy-93. US-6 turns left, here; take 9e about one
mile north to Golden Gate Canyon Road. Turn left onto Golden Gate Canyon Road. It is about 13 more miles to the Park.
From Denver's southern
areas, take the 470 Beltway west (it bends to head north eventually) past the
I-70 exit to the end of the freeway. You will now be on US-6; follow it west
to the intersection of Hwy-46 and Hwy-93. Continue north on 93 about one mile.
Turn left onto Golden Gate Canyon Road. It is about 13 more miles to the Park.
